After our first visit to North Gate Vineyard a year ago, we knew we wanted to come back and sit in front of the fireplace on a nice fall/winter day to enjoy a bottle of wine. When we arrived there was an event at the winery so a group of folks were already enjoying the seats in front of the indoor fireplace. Kelley noticed that there was an outside fireplace. Good looking out Hubs! Eventhough it was 50 degrees outside, why not? The wine could help keep us warm. So, we did get to enjoy the fireplace–outside. And, it was great!

When we arrived, we to asked to join the Trellis Club, North Gate’s Wine Club. While there we met another couple who were outside enjoying the fireplace too, and they were also there for their quarterly wine club pick up. Wine clubs really do have great perks. Some include free tastings whenever you go visit the winery, discounts on wine, first notice of events and snacks/tastings when you pick up your quarterly wine shipment. We opted to receive our first shipment in February 2015, which is the next quarterly date. So in the interim, we purchased a bottle of 2013 Chambourcin (Kelley’s favorite) and hit the back patio. We also opted to taste the 2012 Meritage as well. Here’s our synopis of both:

2012 Meritage: a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (52%), Merlot (24%), Cabernet Franc, (19%), and Petit Verdot (5%) so its more complex in flavor. It’s a bit dry but is not heavy eventhough it has several blends. This would go well with meats for sure and appetizers. Red wine lovers would probably give this one a thumbs up.
2013 Chambourcin: deep purple color, very pronounced flavor, and is good chilled. This a very robust wine where you can definitely taste the boldness of the grapes. Not what we would consider dry but definitely not a sweet wine. This is a great all around wine or it would be good when you want a glass of wine after work. It’s also great with chocolate (trust us).

Since Kelley loves the “Cham” as he calls it, we had to leave with one more bottle to enjoy with our dinner. We can’t wait for our first wine club pick up and to come back and enjoy the fireplace. Inside or outside.

Until next time,
